He is a referee for "The Veterinary Record", "Small Ruminants Research", "Research in Veterinary Science", "Veterinary Research Communications", "In Practice", "Irish Veterinary Journal", "The Veterinary Journal" and "UK Vet".  He was on the Editorial Board of the "British Veterinary Journal" for over twenty years and was appointed to the Executive Board in 1995 to 1998.  During his tenure, a decision was made to change the name from “British Veterinary Journal” to “The Veterinary Journal”. He was on the Editorial Board of a new journal “Second Opinion”. He delivered the Central Veterinary Society Centenary Prize Lecture entitled "The Future of Agricultural Practice" on October 8th 1987. 

He has acted as external examiner at the Royal Veterinary College, Cambridge Veterinary School, Edinburgh Veterinary School and the Dublin Veterinary College.  He has been Chairman of the Examinations Board for both the Certificate and Diploma in Cattle Health and Production, and was an examiner for five years for the Registration Examination of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for overseas veterinarians wishing to practise in the United Kingdom. He has been the examiner of PhD and MSc theses for other universities in Britain and abroad.  He has been a full internal examiner in the B.Vet.Med. examinations during the whole of his time at the Royal Veterinary College and for the MSc in Animal Health in 1996 and 1997. 

He was recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Specialist in Cattle Health and Production in 1991.  He received de facto recognition as a Diplomate of The European College of Bovine Health Management (DipECBHM) in January 2004.  He was appointed Chairman of the Validation Committee 2004 to 2007 and in July 2008 he was elected onto the eight-person ECBHM Board and remained for the statutory two-year term.  He was also from 2004 to 2013 Chief Executive of The European School for Veterinary Postgraduate School (ESVPS), which ran examinations for general practitioners in the Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Portugal and United Kingdom.  He was Director of the Embryo Veterinary School (EVS) from 2003 to July 2012, which provided a practical and lecture course for sixth-form students considering the veterinary profession as a career. He acted as Independent Assessor of the Animal Health and Welfare Modular Course in Years 1 and 2 at the new Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science and in 2010 he assessed their clinical rotations in farm animal practice, farm animal clinical skills, herd health and exotic animal courses. 

In 2005, he was registered with the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners until its demise in 2009.  From September 2007 he has been an Examiner in the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine Finals examinations at the Royal Veterinary College.  In September 2008 he became a Diplomate of the European College of Small Ruminant Health Management (DipECSRHM).  He has been a Member of British Institute of Agricultural Consultants since 1998 and he was elected a Fellow in January 2009.  In 2010, He was awarded the first National Office of Animal Health Award for Contribution to Animal Health. In 2015, he became a founder member of the British College of Veterinary Specialists.
